3-4 year old dancers:
Tuesdays @ 9:15-10:00 a.m. (2-3 openings)

Winter Showing Date and Time

Mark your calendars! Our Winter Dance Showing, "Nutcracker Sweets" will be held on Saturday, December 19th at 3:30 p.m. at the Davis County North Branch Library Auditorium (in Clearfield).  I know it is a busy time of year. The show will be short and sweet.  There is no admission charge, and there will not be a costume fee. I'm planning to be done by 4:00 p.m. so people can get out to their holiday parties, etc. Participation in the show is not mandatory, but I do ask that you let me know beforehand if your dancer chooses not to participate. Thank you!

August 31-Wednesday, Sept. 2- First week of classes

September, 7^th- Labor Day, NO CLASS

October 26- October 28- Halloween Celebration! Dancers may wear “danceable” costumes. More information to come.

December 14-16- Last week of classes before Winter break. December Tuition is discounted to $18 for 3-4 year olds and $20 for 5-6 year old dancers.

Classes will resume January 4^th!

What makes us different?

Many studios offer great classes for young dancers. Something that sets The Dance Garden apart, is
the way we weave imagination and creativity throughout every class. Children are meant to imagine. They learn through play and exploration. They also need structure and discipline. The creative dance classes I teach provide opportunities for creativity and imagination within a structured class.


While I always use imagination and creative ideas to teach our warm-up, technique, and traveling steps, my favorite part of class is the last 10-15 minutes where we explore movement together. I bring in an idea from seasons or nature, a piece of artwork, a children's book, or a prop. During this segment, we explore these ideas as we improvise and create our own dances. From the very beginning, our dancers are little choreographers. We imagine what it is like to stretch fresh butterfly wings and take our first flight. We explore the differences between a gentle breeze and a whirlwind. We tiptoe through forests, leap over rivers, and gallop down winding cobblestone paths. It is fun and fulfilling for us to learn about ourselves and our world as we grow as dancers. It is amazing how my students grow together, develop confidence, learn to listen and cooperate with friends, and turn into beautiful little movers through this form of dance. Free trial classes are available for dancers ages 3-5 on July 28th at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. A parent/child trial class for 2-3 year olds will be held July 29th at 10 a.m. You can also register for our fall session, which begins September 1st. Free Trial Classes at THE DANCE GARDEN!

Come dance with me! The following classes will be offered on July 28^th and 29^th. Following each class, there will be time for questions, filling out registration forms, etc. I am combining the preschool and kindergarten ages just for these trial classes. Beginning fall session, preschool and kindergarten ages will be separate.

Tuesday, July 28-

10:00-10:45 a.m – “Enchanted Garden”-      Ages 3-5

11:00-11:45 a.m. –“ Enchanted Garden” –   Ages 3-5

Wednesday, July 29-       

10:00-10:45 a.m. – “Bugs and Butterflies” –   Ages 2-3 with parent    

If you have a dancer that would like to attend one of these classes, please contact me with your name, your dancer's name and a request of which day/time he/she would like to attend. I will email a confirmation to you when your dancer is registered for their trial class.

Please dress your dancer(s) in comfortable fitted clothing. (ie. leotards, footless tights, fitted t-shirts, leggings, dance skirts,  or shorts and non-baggy t-shirts for boys.) We dance barefoot, so no shoes are necessary. Parents are welcome to sit and watch. Because our dancing space is limited, I am requesting that you leave children who will not be participating at home. If you have concerns about this, please contact me.

Based on demand, I may open up more trial class days/times. If this happens, I will post on facebook and my blog. If the days/times listed here don’t work for you, but you are interested in a class, please send me an email or facebook message. I will let you know if/when new times are available.

Fall Schedule 2015

Our fall schedule is ready! I will be teaching the following days/times. I am willing to open more classes at other times, based on demand (at least 3 dancers in a class). Classes will begin September 1st. Yay!

Mondays:
Creative Dance for ages 5-6: 4:00 p.m.-4:50 p.m.

Registration forms must be filled out and returned on or before the first day of class, along with the $10 annual registration fee. ***I do plan to offer free trial classes in July and August, but since we are still under construction those dates are not available. I will post the dates and times for trial classes on this blog in late June.

What is creative dance?

What is creative dance? A lot of people ask me that question. I'll do my best to explain, but it is best understood by experiencing a class. In a future post, I will be announcing dates for free classes this summer for students (and parents) to come and experience the magic of creative dance for themselves. I also plan to post some videos in the future to demonstrate a little of how I teach.

I follow the philosophy of creative dance pioneer, Virginia Tanner, who believed that the use of "wholesome, creative activity would allow children to develop alert minds, healthy bodies, and strong character." Her philosophy is best described in the following statement:

“The motivating force behind my work is not only developing excellent dancers, but more importantly, developing young people who are useful, imaginative, worthwhile human beings.”

Creative dance combines classical dance training with movement exploration and imagination. It is joyful. It is expressive. It is fun! It is the perfect outlet for children to create, discover, learn, grow , and DANCE!! 

In creative dance, we experience the elements of dance: time (tempo, rhythm, beat), space (traveling, moving in place, moving in, out, over, around, level changes 'high medium, low') and energy (sustained, percussive, swinging, etc.). 

My classes follow a basic format, as follows:

**"Dancing Turn" (this is a moment for children to dance freely at the beginning of class, sometimes with a prop)

**Warm-Up Circle: We stretch, develop and strengthen technique, sing and move rhythmically, etc.

**Locomotor Pathways: We practice traveling through space, developing motor skills and dance steps (Skipping, Sliding (chasse), Galloping, Marching, Leaping, etc)

**Creative Exploration: I bring in a story, picture, prop, or other springboard to inspire movement. We imagine and explore as we improvise and create dances together.

THE DANCE GARDEN - COMING SOON!!

Have you heard?! We are finishing our basement into a dance studio for littles! My sweet husband, kind neighbors, and even my little boy :) have been working hard to help me get this going. We hope to have the studio finished by the beginning of the summer, and plan to begin classes this fall (2015)! 

I'm so excited about it! I love teaching dance and have been wanting to find a way to do more while staying home with my young children.
